The builders figure the grit will fall downward and the ways are always covered from verticle fallout. The ways on a surface grinder stay free of grit relatively well. After cleanup I was surprised to see it had the original factory grey paint. My 6 X 12 Harig: The previous owner had the ways rescraped so it is in great condition. Put the saddle back on the grinder and start up the oil pump and make sure oil appears at the weep holes. I recomend removing the table and saddle from the grinder and clearing grit away from the oil return passage ways and cleaning the rest of the ways.
I called Harig and they told me to use their oil not regular waytac. Needless to say, oil like this will not pump through the oil pump. I have done oil changes in Harig grinders where the oil was so thick I scooped it up with my hands. If you run regular waytac oil it will gel up like Jello. The story I got is the Harig oil is not affected by coolant.
You should buy the lube oil directly from Harig. I have ran, repaired and maintained Harig surface grinders for over 30 years.
